Meet Tofu, an adorable red panda who recently made her public debut at the Detroit Zoo. Born in June, she finally stepped out on Saturday, September 19 with her mom, Ta-Shi. They were seen exploring together in a wooded part of their enclosure.
The Detroit Zoo announced the sighting by including several sweet photos on their Facebook page. These pictures capture Tofu’s fuzzy face, while simultaneously highlighting the loving bond she has with her mom as they touch noses. These moments were months in the making, but it was worth the wait—Tofu is undeniably cute.
Red pandas, like many species, face issues related to extinction, and there are about 10,000 of them left in the world. In the wild, they suffer enormous habitat loss, and in captivity, they don’t reproduce very easily—only half of the young survive. Tofu is a success story, and for the time being, she’s at the Detroit Zoo to stay. We’re looking forward to seeing many more charming photos in the months to come.
